Salutogenic, Functional Healthcare

Our team offer comprehensive functional medicine for people who want to address a chronic illness or take a deeper-dive into their health, rather than just a quick-fix.

A salutogenic, functional approach to healthcare focuses on factors that support health and wellbeing, beyond a more traditional, pathogenic focus on risk and problems. Based on your age, goals and personal medical situation, our team will recommend ways to catch small problems before they turn into big problems.

What do you mean by salutogenic?

Imagine two people who live in the same house, share the same room, and play in the same spaces. One gets sick but the other doesn’t. How does this make sense? Health professionals and parents alike immediately look for solutions and answers. They may even ask questions such as, “What caused person A to get sick?” After all, we tend to react to disease only after it happens and look for a way to treat it once it occurs. However, this may be the wrong way to look at the situation. Instead of evaluating the sick person, consider another approach. Ask yourself, “What does the healthy person have that the sick person doesn’t?” This introduces a whole new perspective on how we view our health and how we stay healthy ourselves.

At Vala we use a membership model so we can encoruage people to come back and speak to us more than just when they get sick, or think they need medicine.

We've made it afforable to come and work with our clinicians on a more regular basis (like a health counseller) so we can work with you to create a happier, healthier environment in order to try and prevent you getting sick in the first place.

How does this kind of functional medicine work?

Functional medicine is a systems biology approach to health and disease. It examines how your life functions as a whole, and in doing so, the root cause of disease is often uncovered and the healing process can begin.

You and your Vala clinician will build a detailed health timeline from birth to present. Starting at the foundation of health, you will develop a personalised plan focused on optimising sleep, exercise, stress, nutrition, your living and working environments and your human connections.

Often times, a specific diagnosis can be the result of many different factors. One root cause can also manifest as many different symptoms. How those symptoms manifest depends on an person’s genes, environment and lifestyle.
